At the most recent Wyoming Nurses Association (WNA) Summit and Convention, held on September 22-23rd, Revolutionizing Nursing Education in Wyoming (ReNEW) was awarded the coveted President’s Award. This award is presented periodically at the discretion of the WNA President. The purpose is recognition of achievements of significance to the profession or special service to, or on behalf of, the Wyoming Nurses Association or of the nursing profession. Examples of this award category are newly designed programs or collaborative efforts in the state of Wyoming for improvements in or provision of exceptional provision of services to the citizens.
This year the WNA President, Anne Raga of Gillette, chose the statewide team who designed the ReNEW curriculum. ReNEW is made up of representatives from the schools of nursing and other nursing partners in Wyoming. The team, working through several statewide committees, designed a shared statewide Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum where students can start at a participating Wyoming community college and continue seamlessly to the University of
Wyoming to complete their BSN with the 4th year at UW available through
distance learning.
This visionary team of nurses and nurse educators co-created a nursing curriculum which is standard across the state and is expected to optimize the use of clinical facilities throughout the state and share educational and clinical
resources. ReNEW is guided by a valuing of both the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and the BSN. A shared leadership model was fundamental to the creation of a seamless process for students to move through their education and from one educational institution to another without the barriers that are common when
going from one college or program to another.
Many ReNEW volunteers were present for the award and were lauded for the
cooperative effort and the speed in which they completed a statewide change in the curriculum. Partnerships have been formed that had previously not been in place and the curriculum is currently being used at UW and most Wyoming
community colleges for students enrolled in nursing! ReNEW is clearly an example of shared leadership in nursing and nursing education.
